Jaume Plensa: A New Humanism explores Jaume Plensa’s career-long engagement with themes common to our shared humanity such as dreams, desire, justice and mortality. While Plensa’s oeuvre is marked by his use of a diverse range of forms and materials, the human condition remains the primary subject of his art, which traverses the personal and the collective, the individual and the universal. The exhibition features both monumental and intimate-scaled sculptures and select two-dimensional works from the last forty years, and is the first retrospective for the artist in the United States.
Jaume Plensa debuted his immersive marble installation Utopia in the Garden Pavilion Welcome Center of Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in 2021. The defining qualities of Utopia—a focus on the human form; unity of distinct individuals; a hushed and introverted tone—are recurring themes in Plensa’s work over the past four decades.
